Western Cape woman celebrates 116th birthday in Touws River home

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A Western Cape woman celebrated her 116th birthday on Tuesday at a party with family and friends at the Touws River care facility where she lives.

Staff at the facility, carers, school children, a community band and non-profit organisation staff joined the celebration on Tuesday along with Western Cape Social Development MEC Sharna Fernandez.

Margaret Maritz, fondly known as Ouma Honderd, lived in the Breede Valley all her life and today she is a resident at the Department of Social Development-funded AGS Old Age Home in Touws River.

Last year, she survived Covid-19 and although she struggles a bit with her memory, she is positive and friendly, according to Fernandez.

“I am pleased that Ouma is in good health and has a great sense of humour. She shared many quips and jokes with me during our visit. She has emphasised that a healthy lifestyle is the key to longevity,” the MEC added.

“I wish Ouma Maritz good health and all of the best. She is a shining light in this community, and a reminder to us all to always value older persons in our families and communities.”

Nurse Francina Jacobs, who takes care of Maritz at the home, said she was in good health and spirits and enjoyed receiving visitors.

“Ouma only complained this morning about a sore leg. Otherwise, she is fine,” she added.
