Africa-Press – South-Africa. A pedestrian on her way to work was mauled to death by dogs in Port Alfred on Sunday.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the 37-year-old woman was attacked at 07:45 in Alfred Road.
Two men witnessed the mauling and reported it to a nearby security official, who contacted the police.
“When police arrived, the badly injured woman was lying on the side of the road. The woman sustained serious injuries to her face and upper body,” Naidu said.
“The dogs were nowhere to be found. She died prior to receiving any medical attention.”
An inquest docket was opened.
“Detectives are searching for the owner of the dogs. The number and breed of the dogs are unknown at this stage and police believe that the two males who witnessed the incident can provide crucial information in the investigation,” Naidu said.

The attack is the latest in a spate of maulings reported across the country.
Most instances are believed to involve pit bulls.
Earlier this week, also in the Eastern Cape, a 15-month-old toddler was killed at Gonubie Farm in East London.
The little boy had been playing with the neighbour’s pit bull when it spotted a dog nearby and tried to escape from the yard.
When this failed, the pit bull allegedly went back to the child and bit him on his upper body. He later died in hospital.
