Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Monday Semaya Kumba, announced that South Sudan and Sudan have reached a landmark agreement to review the status of their citizens living in both nations.
The agreement follows a high-level meeting between Minister Kumba and Sudan’s Minister of Interior, Babiker Samra, where both officials pledged to find “amicable solutions” to the long-standing challenges facing their respective populations.
The discussions centered on the practical hurdles affecting citizens, with a specific focus on immigration and residency issues. To ensure these concerns are addressed systematically, the ministers agreed to:
Form a Joint Committee: A dedicated body will be established to review the legal status of citizens in both countries and develop sustainable solutions to their challenges.
Activate Existing Agreements: Both sides emphasized the need to reactivate pending memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and existing bilateral agreements.
Strengthen Diplomatic Exchange: The ministers highlighted the importance of official visits to maintain momentum and ensure cooperation between relevant authorities.
Speaking after the meeting, Ambassador Kumba underscored that the primary objective of this renewed cooperation is the well-being of the people.
“We have exchanged views with His Excellency the Minister of Interior on a number of issues, with the main focus on the status and situation of the citizens of the Republic of South Sudan in the Republic of Sudan, and the citizens of the Republic of Sudan in the Republic of South Sudan.”
