Kiir Appoints New Presidential Press Secretary

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. South Sudan’s president has appointed a new press secretary, according to an official decree.

In a statement dated Feb. 23, the office of President Salva Kiir Mayardit announced the appointment of Ms. Arek Aldo Ajou Deng as press secretary in the Office of the President. The decision was made under Republican Decree No. 65/2026.

The official letter, signed on behalf of the president by Africano Mande Gedima, minister of presidential affairs, said the appointment was effective immediately.

Arek Aldo Ajou Deng succeeds David Amuor Major, who was removed from the position on Feb. 3. The post had remained vacant for about three weeks.

Arek is the chief executive officer of the Luol Deng Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded in 2005 that focuses on youth empowerment through sports and education.

She is the sister of former NBA All-Star Luol Deng, who currently serves as president of the South Sudan Basketball Federation, and the daughter of Aldo Ajou Deng Akuey, a veteran South Sudanese politician.

The press secretary serves as the primary spokesperson for the president’s office and is responsible for communicating government policy and decisions to the media and the public.
