Jonglei Workers Cancel Strike Over Salary Delays

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Jonglei Workers’ Union has agreed to suspend its planned strike following a meeting between union representatives and state government officials.

This was confirmed by the State Acting Minister of Public Service, Tang Chatim who said civil servants will continue working as efforts continue to resolve delays in salary payments.

Civil servants in Jonglei State, represented by the union, had last week threatened to lay down their tools in protest over delayed salaries, with plans to begin the strike this week.

Speaking to Eye Radio on Tuesday, the minister said the workers had agreed to remain on duty while the government engages authorities in Juba to address the issue.

He noted that the salary delays are not unique to Jonglei State but affect public servants across the country.

He said: “What is affecting our employees is basically the same as in other states. The government does not have money. What is happening in the capital of South Sudan is the same as what is happening in Jonglei State and other states.”

He added “The good thing is that the workers have agreed to be patient and allow the leadership to find ways to engage with the central authorities and secure the funds needed to pay salaries.”
