Africa-Press – South-Sudan. A visually impaired young man with a deep passion for storytelling has appealed to the public for support after financial challenges threatened to derail his academic journey.

Johnson Reech Mading, who secured admission to the University of Juba to study journalism, said he has been forced to pause his education after completing only one semester in his first year. He described his struggle as both financial and logistical, highlighting the high cost of essential learning tools and transport. Chief among his needs is a specialized laptop that would allow him to complete assignments and conduct research using assistive software.

“They say you need to have a computer that will help you during lecture time, but I have faced a lot of challenges as an individual and cannot afford one,” he lamented. “I’m calling on well-wishers to support me so I can secure a laptop. It costs about USD 600, which is very hard for me to raise.”

Beyond technology, Reech also faced difficulties commuting from Suk Sita to the university due to a lack of transport fare, further complicating his studies.

Despite the setbacks, he remains determined to continue his education and pursue a career in journalism. He has pledged to make full use of any support he receives.

“I believe, with assistance, I can overcome these challenges and achieve my dream,” he added.

Reech’s appeal underscores the broader challenges faced by students with disabilities in accessing higher education, particularly in resource-limited settings, where the cost of assistive devices and daily expenses can be prohibitive.
