Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Local authorities in Unity State on Monday confirmed that twelve trucks loaded with relief food items arrived in the Unity State capital, Bentiu, on Sunday.
The food and non-food items purchased from Sudan by the Unity State government include maize flour, millet, Dura, lentils, and plastic sheets for the flood-displaced displaced community in the state.
The minister of information and communication, Gabriel Hon Makuei Bol, told Radio Tamazuj Monday that the relief items were being offloaded in Bentiu.
“This donation did not come from anywhere. It was the Unity State government that purchased these food and non-food items from Sudan for its citizens displaced by floods” Minister Hon said. “The floods have displaced communities in many counties in Unity State. It displaced people in Mayom, Mayiandit, Leer, and Panyijar, but the priority is those who are affected the most by floods.”
He said the state Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) will be tasked to distribute the relief items to the affected people but qualified that the intervention is not sufficient to cover all the entire flood-displaced population.
The chairman of the Leek community in Rubkona County, Lam Tungwar Kueigong, said, “We have many communities displaced by floods in the seven counties of Leer, Mayiandit, Rubkona, Guit, Mayom, Bentiu, and Panyijar and they need humanitarian assistance.”
He said that there is still a need for more intervention because the floods are still submerging villages and islands and that the state government has tried to dig some dykes to control the floodwaters.
“The government has now intervened by bringing twelve trucks from Sudan because access to Juba is cut off by floods and even access to those counties affected by flood in Unity State is difficult. The only route to purchase these items is from Sudan,” Lam said.
