Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The government has issued an ultimatum to the private developers who grabbed public school playgrounds to remove them or else they will be brought down after two weeks.
Speaking during the consultative workshop on the state of education in Central Equatoria State, which ended last week, the Vice President of Service Cluster, Hussein Abdelbagi, said the government is committed to promoting the level of education and will begin by flushing out all the illegally constructed buildings on school lands.
He said, “There are two weeks left until the deadline. We will proceed to remove the buildings that were built illegally on the school grounds.”
The VP revealed how the authorities noticed fraudulent dealings in some of the state sectors of education where some individuals created loopholes to syphon public funds.
“We found cases of corruption in Jonglei State [where one of the schools does not have students but pays teachers’ salaries], and we immediately suspended the director of education in the state.”
He added, “We will continue with the programs of holding exams for teachers to classify the qualified ones whose appointments will be approved. As for the unqualified ones, they will be removed from the ministry’s lists.”
Abdelbagi stressed the importance of the free education policy announced by the government recently.
The minister of general education and instruction, Awut Deng Acuil, recently announced the allocation of SSP 1 billion as a first payment to support free education after the initiative was announced by President Salva Kiir.
“I am pleased to inform the public that the Ministry of Finance and Planning has paid the first tranche of the grant, which is an amount of one billion South Sudanese pounds,” she stated at a press conference at the ministry in Juba.
