Africa-Press – South-Sudan. An activist appealed to President Salva Kiir and the First Vice President Riek Machar to increase their efforts and push for the completion of pending tasks as the revitalised peace agreement enters its fifth year.
Speaking to The City Review yesterday, Bol Deng Bol expressed worries about whether the parties would implement the pending tasks knowing that there are only a few months left to the election.
“Five years with selective implementation of agreements in the whole of five years is something that worries me, and I am asking myself what leaders will do in the five months left,” Bol said.
He added that unless key principles of the peace agreement double efforts in the next few months, without political will, nothing will be done.
He appealed to the two leaders to shun election games and focus on the implementation of the peace agreement.
“I am seeing the two powerful individuals taking different ends—one saying we need an election by all means, whether conditions are met or not, and the other saying we cannot go for an election without security or other tasks being implemented.
He condemned leaders for taking elections seriously while peace is left aside, adding that there is no need to have differences always.
“As civil society, we condemn this, and we will not allow our leaders to all the time continue to change the narrative. This is not about me wanting this, we want this, this is about the people, and what do we have to do as leaders?” he said.
Bol said that the country needs peaceful elections, and these require pending tasks to be implemented first.
On September 12, 2018, President Salva Kiir Mayardit and his now-first vice president signed an agreement ending five years of war.
However, in 2022, South Sudan’s parties to the 2018 peace deal have agreed to extend the transitional period of the unity government by two years due to the parties’ failure to implement some parts of the agreement.
