Africa-Press – South-Sudan. A prominent South Sudanese activist on Monday called on President Salva Kiir Mayardit to take immediate action to address escalating insecurity in Warrap State, following Saturday’s inter-communal violence that resulted in six deaths and 17 injuries.
On Saturday, the renewed violence erupted between the Thiik and Akok communities of Nyapagok Payam in Tonj East County, which left four people dead and 16 others injured.
Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), called on the country’s leadership to take urgent action to address the escalating violence in his restive home state, Warrap.
“I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to his excellency, President. The situation of Warrap state requires a robust response because we are losing innocent lives of citizens,” Yakani said in a statement extended to Sudans Post on Monday.
Yakani condemned the killings of six people and called on the state governor to restore calm.
“I would like to take this opportunity to strongly condemn the deadly violence taking place in Warrap state in the region of Tonj, where we have seen a burning of Nyapgok town,” Yakani said.
“These deadly incidents are very bad, and they’re making our citizens pay a high price for things that do not benefit them or any of the warring parties among the communities.”
An outspoken activist claimed these rising communal violence and revenge attacks are politically motivated by area politicians.
He appealed to politicians to refrain from fueling communal violence, threatening to shame them.
“We are watching, we are documenting. One day, one time, we will name those individuals who are fueling this violence in the region of Tonj and specifically in Warrap State. So, we would like to appeal to you as our leaders to abstain from fueling violence on the ground.”
He also appealed to the Warrap State governor to undertake a proactive role in ensuring to bring an end to the deadly violence.
“I like to urge the communities who are conflicting in Warap state and specifically the bell of Tonj to abstain from using violence as a way of resolving their differences. You better resolve your differences through dialogue.”
