Angelina, who is also the wife of detained Vice President and Chairman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO), Dr. Riek Machar, had her smartphone, laptop, and internet modem confiscated, according to a statement from the party’s spokesperson, Pal Mai Deng.
Speaking to local media on Monday, Deng alleged that the confiscation was a deliberate attempt to restrict Teny’s communication, limit her political activities, and isolate her from both national and international stakeholders.
In a press statement released to Sudans Post on Monday, Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organisation (CEPO), described the move as confrontational, warning that it could push the country into instability.
“The recent seizing of gadgets of the minister of interior is demonstrating further political friction and an unacceptable practice that contributes to delaying genuine political transition of the situation of the country from violence to peace,” Yakani said.
The Executive Director added, “We are worried that the continuous political frictions around the implementation of the R-ARCSS may drag the country to prolonged political instability.”
He highlighted that the peace agreement, signed in 2018 to end years of civil war, has faced repeated setbacks due to mistrust and a lack of political will among the signatories.
Yakani appealed to the peace signatories to prioritise the interests of the citizens and address political rifts amicably.
“The common citizens are really tired of this prolonged political friction among our political elites since 2013 until today. It is time to sort out political differences more than confrontations,” he stated.
The activist called on political parties, especially the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Government (SPLM-IG) and SPLM-IO, to demonstrate genuine political will if sustainable peace is to be achieved.
“Our political leaders should embrace a high level of honesty and sincerity to mitigate their political frictions. CEPO is urging the leadership of the SPLM-IO and SPLM-IG to embrace dialogue for resolving their political differences,” Yakani said.
He added, “The approach of the confrontation will drag the country for a long time to gain political stability. Securing political stability through dialogue is the best approach.”
The confiscation of Teny’s devices comes amid heightened political tensions in South Sudan, where the government has intensified its crackdown on senior opposition figures, particularly those affiliated with SPLM-IO.
In recent months, several opposition leaders have faced arrests, surveillance, or harassment, forcing some to flee the country for their safety. The incident has sparked fears of further erosion of trust between the government and opposition, threatening the delicate balance established by the R-ARCSS.
South Sudan, which gained independence in 2011, has struggled to maintain stability following a brutal civil war that began in 2013, claiming thousands of lives and displacing millions.
The R-ARCSS, signed in 2018, aimed to establish a transitional government and pave the way for democratic elections. However, delays in implementing key provisions, including security sector reforms and the unification of armed forces, have fueled mistrust among the signatories and deepened public frustration.
