Aweil authority warns youth against targeting Sudanese traders

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Northern Bahr el Ghazal State government has warned the youth against targeting Sudanese traders in the area.

The tension has been triggered by an incident where a Sudanese trader, Saber Abdallah Abusam, was accused of molesting a six-year-old to death at the Ayuang residential area in Aweil town on Tuesday.

The incident is reported to have triggered the local youth to attack Sudanese traders operating in Aweil town. At least four traders were injured before the state government intervened.

The State Minister of Information and Communication, William Anyuon Kuol, warned the youth against attacking Sudanese traders.

He said the incident was unpleasant but young people should consider it as an individual act.

“Angry teenagers rioted and attempted to target Sudanese businesspeople in the market following the unfortunate, disappointing, and upsetting news,’’ Kuol said, adding that the ‘‘security officers immediately controlled the situation and brought it under control.’’

He added that the three suspects have been apprehended and that an investigation is ongoing.

“We would like to appeal to the general public to maintain calm and treat this incident as an individual act but not an organised plan by Sudanese traders in the state,” he added.

The incident

According to the state information minister, on May 3 at around 6:00 pm, the accused trader who hails from the Dafur region molested the girl and killed her.

The suspect then dumped the body of the girl into a pit latrine within the compound of Ayuang residential area, Aweil town.

He said according to the mother of the child the suspect was renting a room within their compound.

The government official alleged that the suspect returned home early from the market that day and found the little girl playing in the compound, called her inside his room and molested her. He added that the suspect conspired with his friends to conceal the evidence, hence throwing the body of the victim into a pit latrine.

He added the that suspected had engaged in criminal acts in the past and was not a stranger to flouting the law.

“We have learned that he attempted to rape on three separate counts involving minors,’’ he said.
