Ayii Duang Cousin Detained for Assaulting Bodyguard

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Authorities in Aweil West in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal State have detained Duang Black, the cousin of prominent business mogul Ayii Duang, following an incident in which he assaulted a bodyguard of the county commissioner and attempted to forcibly seize the commissioner’s vehicle in a controversial twist of events.

According to a county source, who requested anonymity due to a lack of authorisation to speak publicly, Duang is the cousin of Ayii Duang, the husband of Aweil West County Commissioner Abuol Akok.

Duang reportedly took the law into his own hands, assaulting the commissioner’s bodyguard in an attempt to take control of a V6 vehicle. The incident occurred early last week when Duang confronted the bodyguard, aiming to seize the vehicle for his personal use. When the guard resisted, a physical altercation broke out, resulting in Duang’s arrest and subsequent transfer to Aweil Town for further handling.

The source explained that the V6 vehicle belongs to Ayii Duang, a well-known businessman and owner of South Sudan Complex. Upon her appointment as county commissioner, Commissioner Akok began using her husband’s V6 instead of the county’s two government vehicles, which are in poor condition and currently unusable.

The source noted, “What happened is that the car belongs to businessman Ayii Duang, and when the commissioner was appointed, they assigned the V6 to his wife, Abuol Akok. For us in the county, we had two vehicles, but they are not in good condition, so Hon. Abuol came to the county and began using her husband’s vehicle instead, abandoning the government vehicles.”

Duang, along with two other relatives of Ayii Duang—identified as Chol Lual Atak and Duang Atak Wol—allegedly claimed the V6 belonged to South Sudan Complex and should be returned to the company.

The trio confronted the commissioner’s bodyguard, attempting to forcibly take the vehicle’s keys. During the scuffle, Duang reportedly struck a woman who tried to intervene and separate the parties involved.

The situation escalated until police intervened, firing warning shots into the air to disperse the group and restore order. Duang was detained in custody for a day before being transferred to Aweil Town.

The source further stated that Commissioner Akok intends to pursue the case against her husband’s relatives, who she believes abused her authority by attempting to seize the family vehicle while she was performing her official duties. The assault on her bodyguard has added to the gravity of the situation, prompting her to seek legal recourse.

Local residents reported rising tensions in the aftermath of the incident, with supporters of the commissioner’s bodyguard and relatives of Ayii Duang nearly coming to blows. The community remains divided, with some questioning the commissioner’s decision to use her husband’s vehicle instead of the county’s government vehicles, which remain sidelined with flat tires at the county premises.

Residents expressed uncertainty about whether Commissioner Abuol will return the V6 to her husband’s company or continue using it for official duties, given the poor state of the county’s vehicles.
