Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Santino Deng Wol, urged the joint forces to be deployed in Anet, Abyei Administrative Area, to stick to the mandate of protecting civilians and their property.

Addressing the forces on Tuesday, CDF Gen. Santino Deng, stated that the mandate of the team was to find out the causes of the communal conflicts between the two sisterly communities of Twic and Ngok which have resulted in displacement and the killing of innocent people from both sides.

“We are here to investigate the root cause of the conflict between the Twic and Ngok and see peace between the two; this is the mandate of the committee,” he said.

The Inspector-General of Police, Gen. Atem Marol Biar, and the Director General of National Security Service, Gen. Akol Khor Kuch, directed the forces to promote a culture of peace and love among themselves and the local communities.

“No forces will come from outside the country to stop the conflict here, yet you are there. To the joint operation forces, you are here to stop the conflict between the two communities,” he said.

“We don’t want you to be part of the conflict here; just be neutral.” Akol assured the forces of total peace between the two communities after the investigation.

“Forces should promote a culture of peace and love among themselves and the local communities of Twic and Ngok,” he said.

The forces will be deployed on the border between the Abyei Special Administrative Area and Twic County of Warrap State. Early this year, President Salva Kiir issued several directives, including the deployment of neutral forces to end the cyclic violence. In a Republican Order, Kiir ordered the immediate cessation of hostilities in the Abyei Special Administrative Area and Twic of Warrap State.

This was about Article 97(3) of the Transitional Constitution of the Republic of South Sudan 2011, as amended, and the resolution of the meetings held on January 10 and 11, 2024, with state governors and chief administrators of Abyei and Ruweng Administration Area.

According to the order, President Kiir directed the security sector to ensure that there is a neutral force employed in the conflict areas to stop further escalation.

“The relevant security institutions of the country must deploy neutral forces to the conflict-affected areas with clear operation orders to restore law and order,” the statement read.
