Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Peace guarantors have expressed concerns over the ongoing clashes in parts of South Sudan, warning that if left unaddressed, the clashes could hinder the achievement of total peace.

In its technical monthly meeting in Juba on Tuesday, the Chairperson of the Ceasefire, Transitional Security Arrangement, Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM), Asrat Denero Amad, said the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) was “concerned” by the recurring clashes that have been blamed on rebel factions.

Denero said the IGAD Council of Ministers would want the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity (IGAD) to increase efforts to ensure the implementation of the outstanding security arrangement provisions.

“[IGAD] expressed concerns over the ongoing conflict in the Upper Nile since August 2021, which, if not contained, has the potential to re-ignite a wider national conflict,” he said. He called for a swifter resolution of the conflict through dialogue and the implementation of relevant provisions of the transitional security arrangement.

The Upper Nile region has been witnessing waves of clashes allegedly involving factions of Kit-Gwang, local militias popularly known as the “White Army,” and the Agwelek forces.

Recently, thousands have been displaced in Tonga, New Fangak, and Maiwut counties, adding more layers to the already dire humanitarian situation in the country, with more than half of the population likely to face catastrophic hunger.

This is happening at the same time the armed parties to the agreement, the SSPDF, SPLA-IO, and South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) forces, are being integrated in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 2 of the revitalised peace agreement.
