Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The government of Central Equatoria State has reinforced its fight against criminal gangs in Juba City Council and Yei River County.

This came after the state’s security committee chaired by Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony, convened its ordinary sitting to review growing rates of crimes including kidnapping.

The state minister for peacebuilding, Francis Gerald announced the committee’s resolution directing law enforcement agencies in Juba City Council and Yei River County to apply the law to tame criminal gangs.

“[The committee] directs law enforcement agencies in Juba city council and Yei River County to drastically deal with the criminal gangs with the full force of the law.,” the statement from the office of the government read.

The committee urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and report insecurity issues and directed the Juba City Council to handle land-grabbing issues within Juba and its suburbs.

“Reviews on the General security situation across the State as relatively calm and peaceful and urged the general public to be vigilant and report to the law enforcement agencies on any arising security situation. Directs Juba city council to continue handling the land grabbing issues within the city,” the statement continued.

In July 2022, the governor of Central Equatoria State, Emmanuel Adil Anthony, urged the Mayor of Juba City Council to crack down on gangs, pledging that he was ready to support the course.

‘‘Governor Adil has today re-directed Mayor Allah-Jabu to intensify its efforts on cracking down on criminal gangs, beautification, cleanness and expansion of road connectivity within the city,’’ a statement from the office of the governor read.

‘‘He reassured Mayor of his political will in consolidating some of his plans for the city.’’

In the same month, JCC arrested 500 youth suspected to be part of gangs dubbed “Toronto” or “Niggas” known around the city for snatching bags, computers and mobile phones.

The Mayor said the gangs would be sent to other states to provide manpower in agriculture fields by producing food for the country.

“Those arrested will be sent to different states to work for agricultural production until the government makes a reformatory for them because most of them are underage,” read a statement from Allan Jabu’s office.
