Chinese Miner Dies in Kapoeta Bee Attack

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Kapoeta South County, Eastern Equatoria State, (Eye Radio) – A devastating bee attack at a gold mining site in Kapoeta South County on Wednesday killed an 85-year-old Chinese national and injured his South Sudanese colleague, county authorities confirmed.

Authorities identified the deceased as Yan Shao, and his South Sudanese companion sustained injuries.

Juma Justin, the County Executive Director, reported that the men were working at the mining site around 6:00 a.m. when a swarm of bees viciously attacked them, leaving both in a coma.

They received immediate rescue and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Tragically, Mr. Yan Shao succumbed to his injuries at approximately 10:00 a.m. due to his advanced age and compromised immune system.

“The bees stung them all, but due to his advanced age, approximately 85 years old, and weakened immune system, he was unable to withstand the bees’ venom, which led to his death,” Justin explained in an exclusive interview with Eye Radio.

The body of the deceased has been flown to Juba, where it is currently with the Chinese Embassy, pending transportation to his home country.

Both men were employed by a mining company belonging to the government of Eastern Equatoria State. This unfortunate incident highlights the unexpected dangers that can arise in remote working environments.
