Africa-Press – South-Sudan. At least 25 officers of the directorate of national civil defence graduated yesterday after completing one month of training.
The officers were trained in civil defence science, fire equipment knowledge, safety, and disasters management.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Commissioner-General for the National Civil Defence, Gen. Jemeson Losuk, said the directorate of civil defence is facing a lot of challenges including the financial constraints to facilitate their duty.
“Knowledge is power, if you want to build the country, build it with knowledge; without civil defence, we can’t do anything when it comes to safety and disaster management,” he said.
However, he stated that the directorate had written to the ministry of finance requesting for money to train the officers but they are yet to receive any response.
“It’s not easy for us to bring all of you here from the 10 states and the three administrative areas, take the knowledge and skills that you acquired from here, translate them into action, and train others in your areas,” Gen Losuk told the graduates.
He noted there are several training opportunities abroad for the country and the government is only expected to pay $170,000.
“We keep writing to the finance department to approve, but all in vain,” he said, adding they have resorted to local training to bridge this gap.
“We are training with theories and less practical skills due to the lack of a warehouse for practical”.
Gen Losuk appealed to the organization to support and build the training center for the National Civil Defence.
A representative of the graduates, Lt. Col. Santino Mabior, said they were glad for the chance to attend the training in Juba.
“We assure the commissioner that we would use the training to improve the workforce of civil defence in the states.”
“We are glad to learn the civil defence sciences in fire, safety, disaster management, and the rescue of airports, among others. This knowledge will help us train others who did not make it here because of financial issues,” Col. Santino said.
