Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal State, Sarah Cleto, is calling on the political parties to fully implement the 35 percent affirmative action for women’s representation.

Cleto, who spoke during the third day of the 7th governors’ forum in Juba, urged the political parties to use the peace agreement to empower women and girls in different platforms within the country.

She said women’s emancipation is a pivotal step towards addressing the vices of gender-based violence.

“I urge all the political parties to fully implement the 35 percent affirmative action for women’s representation,” Cleto remarked.

“Encourage the government to support women and girls in various arenas, including political representation and social and economic spaces, since women’s empowerment in itself is a tremendous step towards addressing inequities in breeding gender-based violence,” she added.

The governor highlighted the need to advocate for women’s literacy and sensitise families to take their daughters to school.

“We should also require families to enrol their girls in schools and support women’s literacy even with free education, we see that many families are not enrolling their children, especially girls,” she said.

Also, Cleto urged the parties to work closely with women, as they are expected to participate in the December 2024 election.

“As we are moving to the next level of democratic governance, people are talking about elections. I call upon everyone to work with women and support them because we are the ones who are going to vote. So, work with us and we will be happy with our men,” she stated.
