Desperate suppliers turn to President Kiir to have dues paid

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. A group comprising more than 20 individual suppliers who were contracted to supply goods to cantonment sites and training centres across the country is calling on President Salva Kiir to help them get their arrears.

The group said several efforts to claim an undisclosed amount from the National Transitional Committee (NTC) – the body responsible for the welfare of joint trainees at various training centres and cantoned forces – failed to yield fruit.

Despite supplying government forces and armed opposition groups since 2019, the traders claimed that the NTC had not been able to honour its promises several times.

Facing arrest

They further claimed some of them had been imprisoned and their assets confiscated by lenders who wanted to get their money within a certain period but failed, resulting in the total collapse of their businesses.

Speaking on behalf of the group yesterday, businessman, Kasha Majok, called on the president to help recover their lost capital.

He said they have now been barred from accessing the NTC office.

“On February 28, the leadership of the contractors went to Hon. Tut. He gave them two weeks. Two weeks elapsed, and he called and asked for one more week. He gave us the information through the head of staff in his office. So three weeks elapsed and we gave him an extra one week after that, when the pulling rope began. ”

“On April 4, we drafted a letter in which we gave him three days to respond or else we take alternative action including holding the press conference. He called on April 5 and told us he was handling other affairs and [that] we should give him another three weeks. We said, “Okay, no problem, we understand the situation in our country.” But two weeks, three weeks elapsed, “said Mr. Majok.

Mr. Majok added, “Today, we decided to hold the press conference to let him know that whatever time he has given us is not bearing any fruit since 2019. Others are in prison, others have lost their houses or sold them off to pay the debt. And this is to let the president know what is going on and help us.”

Since 2021, The City Review has reported several times on the matter but efforts to reach the office of the Chair of NTC and Presidential Security Advisor, Tut Gatluak, for comment have always been futile.
