Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The academic staff at the University of Bhar El Ghazal have laid down their tools citing delays in the revision of salaries.

The staff welfare chairperson Joseph Lual, said the lecturers would stop discharging their duties on Tuesday (today) until their demands are fully met.

“We shall have three-day strikes from Tuesday … the resumption of work will be on November 11, 2022, in which we will continue for a week. The next industrial action will be disclosed thereafter if no answer is received from the government,’’ he said.

“We are out of patience as an academic association, and therefore we have declared an industrial action.’’

According to Lual, the staff members were forced to lay down their tools due to a lack of commitment from the government to pay the salary arrears for July 2022.

He also added that the government has failed to respond to the calls to revise the salaries to match the prevailing demands of the high cost of living.

“We need urgent implementation of the new salary scale according to the bank inflationary scale of SSP 629 per USD dollar, not budgeting rate of SSP 400 per USD dollar,” he argued.

He revealed that the workers had not been paid their dues dating back to July 2022.

He added that the academic association had also resolved to appeal to the government to include medical allowance, training, and flight tickets in the new salary scale.

For Lual, the plan for the strike can only be interrupted if their demands are fully met. He promised that they would not look back, noting that they had been patient for so long.

He called on the national government to intervene and respond to the request from the teaching staff.
