Africa-Press – South-Sudan. A youth group from South Sudan’s Unity State has appealed to prominent opposition leader Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin to replace the commissioner of Mayendit County Gatluak Nyang over the ongoing violence against civilians in Leer and other parts of southern Unity.
Gatluak was appointed as the commissioner of Mayendit County from the National Democratic Movement (NDM) led by Dr. Lam on the ticket of South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) when Kiir reconstituted state governments last year.
Since last week, fighting has been going on in southern Unity state counties of Leer and Mayendit between forces loyal to the Mayendit County Commissioner and armed civilians resulting in the killings of hundreds of unarmed civilians mostly women in the two southern unity’s two counties.
In a statement extended to Sudans Post, a group of youth activists from Unity State who protested against the violence in Juba on Monday appealed to Dr. Lam to replace the notorious commissioner over the continued violence against civilians and violations to the revitalized peace agreement.
“We are urging you to respect the democracy which occupied the central part of your vision and your party’s vision, we are urging you to save the National Democratic Movement from history by abiding with true spirit of democracy,” the group said in the strong-worded statement.
“We are urging you to relieve the commissioner of Mayendit County and appoint another cadre that will fully respect the democracy and human Rights,” the statement appealed.
The statement said the youth group “believe [s] that, you will not violate the democratic ideals that you have been preaching for more decades since you joined the war of independence.”
It further added that the commissioner “has betrayed the democratic ideals of National Democratic Movement, for that very significant reasons, we are urging you to save National Democratic Movement, and the only legal mean that you can save NDM, is by appointing a new county commissioner of Mayendit.”
