Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony handed over 13 tractors to the county commissioners as part of the state’s agricultural support program.

In his speech at the handover ceremony, the governor said that this falls within the scope of implementation of the strategic plan developed by the state government, which relies on agriculture as a major field in achieving economic development.

The government of Central Equatoria State has done well because it paid attention to the need to develop the agricultural sector. This can only be done through the use of modern mechanisms, which will make it possible to benefit from the promising agricultural sector in South Sudan.

Agricultural development is one of the most powerful tools for ending extreme poverty, promoting shared prosperity, providing food for the country’s population, as well as exporting to neighbouring countries.

It is important for the state government to ensure that these tractors and other subsidies reach the farmers who really need them by working with state farmers’ associations.

Farmers must feel that they are part of this process, and therefore they must be involved in everything related to agricultural development plans. Such can be achieved through the representation of their associations and federations according to the regions.

There is no doubt that any plan aimed at stabilising the economic performance in South Sudan and maximizing the gross product and development must be based on the agricultural sector. Agriculture is a sustainable resource in addition to the vast fertile lands that South Sudan possesses. The country also has water resources.

Thus, developing agriculture and supporting farmers in all states must be the most important priority of the national government. It comes with the need to take advantage of modern technologies, and implement agricultural research to develop and enhance this vital sector.
