Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Thomas Tong scored twice as El Merriekh-Juba defeated El Merriekh-Bentiu 3-1 to top Group B in the 2023 South Sudan Cup.

Jimmy Michael Omar, a playmaker for Merriekh-Juba, hit the bar three minutes into the game, perhaps sending a warning of what was to come.

Just three minutes after Jimmy Omar’s effort, Bentiu’s oil boys came close to scoring, but they were unable to do so due to their weak goal-scoring skills.

Tong put the unbeaten Juba giants in front in 25 minutes, and it was again Jimmy Omar with an assist from his counterattacker. Thanks to Tong for his cool finish.

However, Steven Duol Dayak of Merriekh-Bentiu equalised for Merriekh-Bentiu in the 42nd minute with a free kick after the Juba Boys goalkeepers erred by pinching the ball in the direction of the goal post.

Dayak could not let such a wonderful opportunity pass him by, and his goal tied the game in the first half.

However, Tong completed his hat-trick in the final 56 minutes of the game to make it 2-1 thanks to a cross from his teammate.

The Bentiu youngsters, who were searching for an equalizer, lost motivation after Omot Sebit David’s late goal from the 18-yard line gave the hosts a 3-1 lead.

Elsewhere, in Group A (Rumbek), Salam FC Aweil were the winners over Gonzaga FC.

Deng Aguero’s first-half goal was the only goal that separated the two sides, although the two teams will jet to Juba for the final level.
