Ex-lawmaker resigns from Denay Chagor’s party over control of party affairs

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. South Sudan opposition politician Anter Bayak has resigned from the South Sudan United Movement/Army (SSUM/A), citing unnecessary powers for the group’s leader and governor of Jonglei State Denay Jock Chagor.

Bayak, who was a member of parliament representing Duk County on the ticket of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA), told Sudans Post on Friday that he resigned because of Chagor’s interference with his work in parliament and in the party.

“The issue that led me to resign is that you know this political party was formed in 2018 during the peace negotiated in Addis Ababa and their role is to implement the peace agreement,” Bayak said.

“But when I went to the parliament, my thinking was not to represent the interest of my party, but the interest of the people. But because the agreement has given a potion to political parties, it is considered rude now for you to go to the parliament to go and advocate for the right of the people,” he added.

Bayak said he was targeted while working in the parliament by his party because he had chosen to advocate for the interest of the people against the interest of the party’s leader who doubles as Jonglei governor.

“When also I tried to exercise my right as the member of the parliament, the party said that I differed with them because their interest is different,” he said.

Bayak accused the state governor of controlling the parliament so that he can steal funds meant for the people of Jonglei State.

“There are three branches of government in the State the first is the executive, the second is Parliament and lastly is the Judiciary. But Denay tried to interfere with the work of the Parliament and that’s why he suspended some of the people and revoked some of the members because he wants to control the resources of the state without any voice and he wants us as the party members so that we support him because he is the chairman of our party, but that is not our work,” he said.

Bayak said he had raised a motion in the Parliament before the termination of his membership about the incompetency of Jonglei state minister for finance who is a member of South Sudan United Movement.

“I raised the motion for the impeachment of the minister of finance and when the minister was impeached, I was the one who raised the motion and I came from his party and why I raised the motion is because I see that the minister of finance is not capable to do his job,” he said.

“The reason for the motion is that number one he don’t know the resources envelope of the state, two he don’t know who the signatories are, the signatories are the bodyguard of Denay, thirdly, he doesn’t know even what do the resource envelop means,” he charged.

Bayak did not reveal which political party he will join but said he will decide soon.

For his part, the Executive Director of Governor Chagor’s office Gatkek Gony said Bayak was dismissed from the party last year and that his claim of resignation from South Sudan United Movement is not genuine and that he was dismissed for misconduct.

“That one is not genuine because he was dismissed from the party since last year, he is no longer a member of SSUM party. If you have been officially dismissed from the party you should not resigned you resign from where,” Gatkek said.

“The reason for his dismissal is that you can be a good participant of the party, and then you need to be loyal to the party. Anter was not working for the will of the party according to what I know because even he tried to criticise his boss into the extend of ailing with some group who were people of the street” he added.
