Ex-Tanzanian president meets Kiir in Juba

Africa-PressSouth-Sudan. Former Tanzanian president Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete has arrived in South Sudan’s capital Juba and has met President Salva Kiir Mayardit on several issues including bilateral relations, according to a statement by the presidency.

“His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit received and held discussions in his office, with the Former President of Tanzania, His Excellency Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete and his accompanying delegation,” the presidency statement reads in part.

“H.E. the President and his guest discussed matters of common interest, and issues pertaining to South Sudan political situation, as well as various issues across the continent,” the statement added.

The meeting was attended by presidential affairs minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin, deputy foreign minister Deng Dau Malek, as well as president Salva Kiir Mayardit’s special envoy Albino Aboug.

Speaking to media after the meeting, Hon Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin said “H.E. Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete has been a very instrumental person in solving political problems of South Sudan.”

For his part, the former Tanzanian president said he “applauded H.E President Salva Kiir for making a milestone on the ongoing implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement.”
