Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Some family members narrowly escaped death after a massive stone rolled off the Jebel-Kujur area and destroyed their houses in the Timondi area in Juba.
Explaining their ordeal to Eye Radio Wednesday morning, Clement Aninyeki, whose house was flattened by the stone, said the incident happened at 9:30 PM last evening.
Aninyeki also known by his nickname as Mr. Kulu says, the incident occurred three days after he and his brothers moved out to another house.
He says the decision came after they sensed the stone had been under intense heating by a quarrying man.
“The incident happened last night, the demolished house belongs to me, and my brother. Actually, they survived death,” Aninyeki narrated what happened to Eye Radio.
“This stone that rolled down has been burning up there for a long time, but we didn’t know what time it would roll down, unfortunately, yesterday we were in the other compound of mine, and we saw the stone rolling down and destroying this house where my brother lives, destroying several things. On the other side, I was constructing a toilet there. It was half built, and it’s now destroyed.”
The area chief, Abbas Michael says that he had warned some individuals involved in quarries in the area, but they ignored his advice.
Michael says the damages would have been averted if they had listened to him.
“We have warned our youth several times on the issue of crushing stones, but they have refused to listen. We opened a case against him because we don’t know what will happen in the future,” said Michael.
“The accident did not only affect the house alone there is a house, but a septic that is under construction, and aggregate stones roughly a trip and half that belongs to a woman called Angelina was scattered.”
Quarrying has become a lucrative source of income for many impoverished families in Juba, with most of the activities taking place around the Jebel Kujur area.
