Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Authorities in Raja County, Western Bahr el Ghazal State, have reported a buildup of large trucks carrying goods at the Sopo bridges after damage to one of the structures that links the area to the state capital, Wau.
According to Adyson Arkanygelo, the Commissioner of Raja County, the bridge located at Sopo Payam—42 miles from Raja Town and 168 miles from Wau—has been partially damaged, disrupting the flow of goods and movement of residents.
Commissioner Adyson said the damage has prevented large trucks from crossing, raising serious concerns among citizens and traders. Only small cars are currently able to pass from one side of the bridge to the other.
He added that he cut short his visit to Wau in order to urgently address the matter. He spoke to Eye Radio this morning from Wau.
“The Sopo bridges at Sopo Payam that were rebuilt by the UNMISS field office in Wau in 2023 were damaged, and we as the government have to contribute to that so that the road between Wau and Raja remains functional in all four seasons,” he said.
“The road must be good because it helps in keeping security, transporting goods from state to county and vice versa. We know the importance of this road because it helps in economic, security, and many aspects.”
According to the Commissioner, the bridge was affected by heavy rain last week and water flowing from the Central Africa side.
“It happened on one side of the bridge. It is not a big damage at the entrance. It happened because of the heavy flow of water in Raja County. As you know, we are at the border with Central Africa where heavy rain happened that has affected the bridge. It has separated the end of the bridge from the land at the end of the stream.”
