Fortune Charumbira: Pan-African Parliament president calls for ‘Africanism’

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The newly elected president of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) Fortune Charumbira, has pledged to unite Africans for the common good of the continent.

Fortune easily won the seat after South Sudanese – Amb Albino Mathom pulled out of the race, following the establishment of the Bureau of Pan-African Parliament as the mode of electing the president.

Charumbira, who got 161 of the 203 votes cast, has called on the continent to embrace the ubuntu spirit.

“I want us to come together; we need to immediately fight and destroy the divisions caused by these foreign languages in Africa imposed on us by outside continents and resulted in us identifying one another as Anglophones, Francophones and Lusophones.

“I am a president for all irrespective of where you cast your vote. Let us do away with unnecessary conflicts.”

The African Union Commission (AUC) chair, Moussa Faki Mahamat who represented African Union (AU) head, Macky Sall, presided over the process as stipulated in article 14 (1) of the PAP Protocol.

Protocol disctaes that the Plenary Session of the Parliament shall be president over by the African Union chair until a new president is elected into office.

On Tuesday, Faki urged Pan-African Parliamentarians to “unite and put Africa first.”

“Honorable Pan-African Parliamentarians, we and our overnments have a long way to go so that you can, as reason and wisdom dictate, find yourselves in the best possible conditions to fulfil your noble mission,” said Mahamat.

“We need you to unite to achieve the goal of a developed and prosperous Africa. We are aware challenges are there, but when we try everything and unite towards one Africa, we will achieve our goal for the people of Africa. We need to start seeing things with one eye. The division will never get us anywhere as Africans.”
