Africa-Press – South-Sudan. At least three senior South Sudanese athletes and one under-20 flew to Mauritius to participate in the 2022 African Athletics Championship.

William Yaj will be representing South Sudan in 1,500 and 5000 metres races as Abraham Got Thon will battle it out in an 800 metres race. In addition, the only lady, Lucia William, will be participating in the 100 and 200 metres.

Thiel Deng Thiel, who grabbed two silver medals in recent Tanzania last week, will go for his favoured distances of 200 metres and 400 metres.

The quartet will be under the tutelage of coach Peter Patreis Mongu.

“The athletes have been camping outside the country. Others have been in Uganda, while others have been in Kenya. I believe they have what it means to be and expect from them. “

“Indeed, some of them have been participating in other regional competitions. They are not new to that game and we hope they are just going to do their best,” Mongu stressed.

Support needed

However, he called on the fans to keep supporting the athletes for them to continue to do their best in the competitions.

“What all of us need to do as fans and officials is continue to give support to the players. With everyone’s support, these guys can do better, “he added.

The federation’s Secretary-General, Marco Akol Deng, said the competitions will kick off from Wednesday, June 8 to June 12, 2022.

He said it had been a busy time for his players, adding that all the players had been doing well in all the competitions they had been competing in.

“I do believe the athletes are going to do something good for the country because if you look at the records they have been setting these days, there are great improvements.”

“Even from the previous competitions in Uganda, Tanzania, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and even in other international competitions, our guys have never finished the competition outside of the top three. To me, that is great,” he said.
