Africa-Press – South-Sudan. A devastating attack on a boat carrying traders from Unity State to Juba has left four people dead and six others missing, according to a statement from Gatwech Bipal Both, Unity State’s Minister of Information and Communication.
The incident, which occurred on June 27, 2025, has sparked condemnation and calls for justice from the Unity State Government.
The boat, carrying 53 traders from Panyinjiar County, departed Unity State in the morning and safely reached Lakes State territory, where it was provided an escort by Yirol East County authorities, according to a statement released Tuesday.
However, at around 4:00 PM, armed assailants, believed to be youths from Lakes State, attacked the vessel at Shambek Port in Babthok. The state official said the attackers overwhelmed the escorting police officers and opened fire, forcing the traders to flee into nearby swamps for safety.
Bipal said after a thorough search, authorities confirmed that four traders were killed, while 42 survivors managed to make their way back to Unity State through the swamps. Six traders remain unaccounted for, and one woman, along with the boat, was under the care of Shambek Port authorities.
The Unity State Government strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a senseless act of violence. “Revenge tendencies ought to stop,” Minister Gatwech stated, urging calm and restraint among citizens, particularly the youth and families of the victims.
The government extended its heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed and called on Lakes State authorities to swiftly apprehend the perpetrators and ensure justice is served.
“We appeal to all citizens of Unity State to remain calm and refrain from retaliation. Let the laws take their course,” the minister said, emphasising the government’s commitment to peace and justice.
Unity State also expressed its openness to dialogue and collaboration with Lakes State to address underlying tensions and prevent future conflicts.
The attack has heightened concerns about safety along South Sudan’s riverine routes, a vital lifeline for trade and connectivity between states.
In June, the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) initiated a recruitment exercise of 3000 personnel to bolster security in the riverine region following an incident of boat hijacking by suspected rebel forces.
The Unity State Government reiterated its dedication to fostering unity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence among South Sudanese communities, both locally and globally.
As investigations continue, authorities in Lakes State have yet to comment publicly on the incident. The Unity State Government’s call for calm and constructive dialogue underscores the urgent need for reconciliation in a region long plagued by intercommunal tensions.
