Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The government has dispatched a high-level committee to Khartoum, Sudan, to discuss ways of ending attacks on civilians in Northern Bahr El Ghazal State by the Sudanese’s Misseriya.

According to well-placed sources, the reasons for the visit were to hold discussions on the bilateral relations between Sudan and South Sudan, with the agenda being the attack on civilians in Aweil and Abyei by Misseriya, and the forces that cross to the country and carry out attacks. The office of the governor of Unity State confirmed the arrival of Governor Joseph Manytuil and the high-level delegation on Thursday in Khartoum.

The sources further disclosed that the mission was to deliver the country’s message of solidarity on the resignation of the Sudanese Prime Minister, Abdalla Hamdok, as well as the political unrest geared by heightened demonstrations for the removal of the military leadership so that a civilian government could be established.

The delegation was led by the Presidential Advisor on National Security Affairs, Tut Gatluak, the Governor of Unity State, Dr Joseph Manytuil, the Director-General of Internal Security Bureau, Akol Khor, and the Director-General of Military Intelligence, Stephen Marshall, to mention but a few.

Attacks on civilians A few days ago, the government of Northern Bahr El Ghazal called on the national government to intervene and devise ways of ending attacks by Misseriya on civilians.

“We appeal to the national government of South Sudan to put an end to these frequent attacks on our innocent civilians,” said William Anyuon Kuol, the Minister of Information and Communication in Northern Bahr Ghazal State. This was after nine civilians and three soldiers got killed in an attack on Yilh Pobol village of Majiep Payam, Aweil East County.

The minister stressed that the Misseriya militia had been perpetuating attacks on civilians since December 30, 2021, leading to the deaths of 15 people killed as their wounded horses remained, 10 AKM rifles and 2 rocket-propelled grenades.

“The Misseriya militiamen sneaked into the village at night with the intention of killing and looting the properties of innocent civilians,” William said.

“On December 30, 2021, they entered the farm and killed one person in his house, and our people killed two from the side of the attackers at Warguet. On the same day, they attacked Warguet Payam and claimed the lives of four civilians, including a 5-year-old child.”

The state government referred to the act as “a clear breach of the 2012 Cooperation Agreement between South Sudan and Sudan in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.”
