Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Minister of General Education and Instruction says South Sudan has achieved gender parity in primary education, with girls’ enrolment now surpassing that of boys in three states.

The states are Central Equatoria, Western Equatoria, and Northern Bahr el Ghazal.

Speaking on the state-owned broadcaster SSBC on Tuesday, Jan. 6, Minister Kuyok Abol Kuyok said the education sector has registered notable progress in school enrolment and teacher training.

He said more than two million children are currently enrolled in schools across the country, describing this as a major achievement for the sector.

However, the minister acknowledged that serious challenges remain, particularly in supporting girls to successfully transition from primary to secondary education.

“Education has witnessed tremendous progress in terms of enrolment. Today, we have over two million children in schools, which is a major achievement,” he said.

“We have also made progress in training teachers, and we have achieved gender parity in primary education in Central Equatoria, Western Equatoria, and Northern Bahr el Ghazal, where there are now more girls than boys in primary schools. Despite this, we continue to experience problems with girls transitioning to secondary education,” he added.

The ministry previously disclosed that about 8,000 girls who completed primary school in 2020 were unable to proceed through secondary education.

The girls were expected to sit for their Certificate of Secondary Education examinations in 2024 but dropped out before reaching the final level.
