Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Earlier this week, GIZ South Sudan started the distribution of context-appropriate agricultural tools to 500 smallholder farmers in Yei River County.
According to a press statement extended to Radio Tamazuj, the 2,750 assorted tools handed over by the GIZ project “Improved Living Conditions and Psychosocial Support (ILiPS)” include hoes, pangas, rakes, fork hoes, and axes. Next week, farmers in Magwi county will receive assorted tools, bringing the total in both regions to up to 5,500 assorted tools for 1,000 smallholder farmers.
“With the onset of the rainy season, the provision of farming tools is an important factor for the farmers to pursue their daily agricultural tasks efficiently and to enable them to increase their production,” the statement reads in part. “The distribution of farm tools is the first in a sequence of activities planned by the ILiPS project, aiming at boosting agricultural production in the two regions of Yei and Magwi counties. As a second step, the farmers will receive quality seeds for vegetables, cereals, and legumes.
“They will also have the opportunity to join trainings on Good Agronomic Practices, Farming as a Business, post-harvest handling, financial literacy, nutrition training and counselling, amongst others,” it added.
The ILiPS project is implemented by GIZ South Sudan on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The project supports returnees, internally displaced persons, and host communities in boosting their agricultural production to improve food security by providing tools, seeds, and training to farmers and cooperating with local training centers and schools to expand the educational opportunities available in the region.
“In addition, the project aims to strengthen access to psychosocial support services for community members and raise awareness on the importance of psychosocial well-being,” the statement concluded.
