The Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Bak Barnaba Chol, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), saying the ministry is ready to support the Bureau in building a credible national statistical system.
Dr. Bak made the remarks during the opening of the Policy Dialogue on Official Statistics at the Bank of South Sudan yesterday. He emphasized that reliable and timely data is essential for effective planning, policy formulation, and monitoring national development priorities.
“The Ministry of Finance and Planning is now ready to support the Bureau in its activities, contributing meaningfully to the statistical system development agenda,” Dr. Bak said.
“The Government looks forward to receiving a comprehensive report from the Director-General, with clear recommendations on the actions needed and by whom, to further improve the national statistical system.”
He noted that the government recognizes the growing importance of data in an era of rapid technological change, including the use of digital tools, artificial intelligence, and innovation in public administration.
Dr. Bak stressed that strengthening the National Bureau of Statistics remains a key priority, highlighting the need for skilled personnel, modern infrastructure, and improved administrative data to better inform decision-making and monitor service delivery across the country.
“The government is looking at ways of strengthening the National Statistical System by first strengthening the National Bureau of Statistics, which is the coordinator and custodian of official statistics,” he added.
“A strong statistical system is essential for planning, monitoring development, and making informed decisions for the country.”
The Policy Dialogue on Official Statistics brought together government officials, development partners, and technical experts to discuss ways of improving data production, analysis, and use, with a view to supporting South Sudan’s national development agenda.
