Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The unity government has reiterated its commitment to holding elections in December 2026, as the high-level committee on peace implementation calls on the finance minister to release funds in instalments.
Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, stated that the High-Level Committee on the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement is determined to ensure the elections are held on schedule.
He said the committee, chaired by senior presidential advisor Kuol Manyang Juuk, met with electoral institutions to prepare the way for the polls.
Speaking to the media in Juba on Tuesday, September 2, Dr. Lomuro praised the institutions for their progress despite limited initial funding.
“Technically, our institutions have done very well. With the small funding that they received initially, they’ve done a lot of good work,” he said. “With a small push now, we can actually do the elections as we want.”
He acknowledged that the committee had identified challenges requiring political and administrative decisions, and they now have a clear basis for action.
“We’re going to encourage the Minister of Finance not to wait until they have the entire budget but to do it by instalment so that we can move forward,” he added.
