Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The governor of Jonglei State, Denay Jock Chagor fired the mayor of Bor municipal council on Monday.
In Gubernatorial Order issued on Monday and seen by The City Review Governor Chagor did not cite any reason for firing of the Mayor of Bor Municipal Samuel Ateny Pech.
Although no reason was given, many residents in Bor Town believed that the land battle between the women’s Union and some state officials could have resulted in the dismissal of the Mayor.
There was no immediate replacement for the position of Bor town mayor.
“I, Denay Jock Chagor, Governor of Jonglei State, do hereby issue this Gubernatorial Order for the relief of H.W. Samuel Ateny Pech as Mayor of Bor Municipal Council in Jonglei State, with effect from March 27, 2023,” the order partially read.
Also In another gubernatorial decree, Governor Chagor reinstated the suspended state minister of lands, housing, and public utilities, Isaac Mamer Ruk, with immediate effect from March 27.
Governor Changor reversed the unilateral decision of his deputy, Akech Deng to suspend the minister of land, housing, and public utilities last week.
“In reference to the letter of the Deputy Governor of Jonglei State dated March 23, suspending the Minister of Lands, Housing, and Public Utilities, that order was not legal and did not follow the constitution,” the order partly read.
It is still not clear why two state officials issued separate orders that seem controversial.
However, this reshuffle came at a time when there was tension between Bor municipality and a group of local businesswomen who accused the municipal council of allotting their land meant for a market to investors.
The angry local businesswomen staged protests in Bor town last week, prompting Deputy Governor Jacob Akech Dengdit to suspend the state minister of lands and housing.
Akech suspended the minister of land after he revoked the order of the former mayor to evict vegetable vendors from the Marol Market.
Both the women and civil society organizations in the state were in support of the decision of the minister of land as opposed to the mayor’s action.
