Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Governor Tong Aken Ngor pledged 6 million South Sudanese Pound to support Aweil students studying at the Upper Nile University branch in Juba.
The pledge came during a fundraising ceremony organized by the students at the Nyakuron Cultural Center in Juba.
The event aimed to address challenges faced by the students, including high dropout rates due to financial constraints.
Ngor, who was attending the ceremony after attending President Kiir’s endorsement ceremony by the SPLM party on Saturday, assured the students of his government’s commitment to tackling issues in their home communities.
“My government has planned to cultivate more than 1,000 hectares of land to combat hunger in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state,” Ngor said.
He also urged young people stranded in Juba to return home and assist their families with agricultural activities.
“With the rainy season starting, I appeal to young people in the capital to return home and join their families in tilling the land,” Ngor said. “Being in Juba cannot solve our problems; we need to work together to eradicate poverty.”
Ngor specifically addressed the students’ concerns about financial difficulties hindering their studies.
“While acknowledging the challenges, I encourage you to persevere and embrace educational opportunities,” he said.
“Our government will employ graduates upon completion of their studies, provided they have the proper qualifications,” he added.
Ngor’s pledge of 6 million SSP raised questions about the potential for political motives behind the donation.
However, the exact allocation and disbursement plan for the funds remain unclear.
