Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The governor of South Sudan’s Northern Bahr El Ghazal Governor Tong Aken Ngor has urged members of the state legislative assembly to prioritize drafting laws to safeguard the state’s natural forests during the assembly’s reopening session on Wednesday.
Addressing the parliamentarians, Governor Ngor emphasized the importance of enacting legislation to curb indiscriminate tree cutting by residents.
“We recently planted 1 million trees, and I have instructed the Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with UNFAO, to continue planting trees to promote rainfall attraction,” he stated.
Ngor’s call comes amid concerns over climate change, which has caused erratic weather patterns and hindered food production in the state and the wider region.
In a separate development, Governor Ngor implored the Members of Parliament to set aside political affiliations and work collaboratively towards the common goal of service delivery.
He also outlined a range of strategies implemented by his administration to enhance service delivery and development initiatives.
These include the installation of telecommunication networks in counties such as Majok-Yithiou (MTN), Malith-Alek-Yai, Warguet, and Awoda, which he anticipates will be completed soon.
Governor Ngor further disclosed that the state government is actively pursuing various plans, including the operationalization of Northern Bahr El Ghazal University. He urged the MPs to streamline the university’s construction procedures to ensure its full completion.
Meanwhile, Northern Bahr El Ghazal Assembly Speaker Achol William Amuoi appealed to the cabinet, particularly its members, to share their policies with the assembly.
“Honorable Governor, kindly work with your executive members to present their ministerial policies to us to pave the way for deliberation and the enactment of policies related to development and service delivery,” she appealed.
The Northern Bahr El Ghazal state assembly had been on recess for over three months.
