Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Cabinet has officially opened Boma National Park to local and international tourists, signaling a major move to revitalize South Sudan’s eco-tourism sector.

Following a Friday Cabinet meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir, government spokesperson Ateny Wek Ateny confirmed that the park—home to one of the world’s largest wildlife migrations—is now fully prepared to welcome visitors and showcase the country’s natural heritage.

Established in 1977, Boma National Park spans approximately 22,800 square kilometers of grasslands and floodplains in eastern South Sudan, near the Ethiopian border.

It is world-renowned for hosting the annual migration of the white-eared kob—a spectacle involving an estimated one million animals moving in massive herds between Boma and Bandingilo National Park.

This phenomenon is recognized as the second-largest land mammal migration on Earth, rivaling the famous Serengeti migration. The park also serves as a critical habitat for several key savannah species, including the rare Rothschild’s giraffe.

The government’s decision to open the park is part of a broader strategy to diversify the economy and promote South Sudan as a premier destination for wildlife enthusiasts and researchers.

“Boma National Reserve is now ready to receive tourists, locals and international alike,” stated Ateny Wek Ateny. “It is now officially launched. The Boma National Park is open for people to start visiting it.”

Authorities believe that opening Boma will not only showcase the country’s natural beauty but also provide economic opportunities for local communities and strengthen wildlife protection measures. The park’s vast scale and biodiversity make it one of the most significant conservation areas in East Africa.
