Africa-Press – South-Sudan. South Sudan government and the breakaway Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) led by former SPLA-IO chief of military staff Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual have recommitted to the use of dialogue to find a peaceful solution to the ongoing conflict.
Gen. Gatwech is the leader of the SPLA-IO Kitgwang faction which is comprised of former SPLA-IO commanders who attempted in August last year to remove First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny as leader of the SPLM-IO/SPLA-IO. Those generals include former SPLA-IO sector one commander General Johnson Olony Thabo and former Sector three commander General Thomas Mabor Dhol.
They had accused First Vice President Machar of surrendering to the government of President Salva Kiir Mayardit at the expense of hundreds of thousands of opposition soldiers who have remained in various cantonment and assembly areas for years without food and adequate health care.
On Tuesday, General Gatwech and Olony met a delegation of South Sudan government led by President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s security advisor Tut Gatluak Manimeh and the two sides recommitted to finding a peaceful solution to the grievances raised by General Gatwech.
“South Sudan Government delegation comprising of the Presidential Advisor on National Security Affairs Tut Gatluak, Director Generals of Internal Security Bureau, Military Intelligence among other Government officials hold face-to-face talks with the group of breakaway SPLA/IO Kitgwang factions in Khartoum Sudan on Tuesday,” South Sudan’s information ministry said in a statement Tuesday evening.
“The leader of the SPLA/IO Kitgwang group General Simon Gatwech Dual expressed willingness and commitment to dialogue with the Government to reach an agreement towards peace and stability,” the statement added.
