Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The government, through the funding from World Bank launched a $129 million productive safety net for socio-economic project to support vulnerable communities and youth.
The project will provide cash support for 96, 000 poor and vulnerable households and economic opportunities for youth to strengthen their resilience.
Speaking at the launch on Tuesday, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Josephine Lagu, said the country is currently undergoing a transition and is steadily shedding dependence on humanitarian aid.
“I urge all humanitarian and development partners to support us in strengthening the humanitarian-development nexus in South Sudan for medium-term recovery,” she said.
“With support from the World Bank and other development partners, the ministry has set up a Single Project Coordination Unit (SPCU), which provides technical oversight and coordination for all the projects under my ministry,” Lagu said.
According to her, they have established national advisory and technical committees consisting of key project stakeholders that will provide oversight and technical support to the implementing agencies.
The Minister of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, Benjamin Warille, said it took the ministry a lot of determination and dedication to ensure that all the preparatory works were put in place before the project was launched.
“Social protection and specifically cash transfers is critical in addressing the historical and socio-economic differences in South Sudan.”
“Cash transfers lift vulnerable households and communities by providing lifesaving financial assistance and skills for self-reliance,” Warille said.
She hailed the cooperation between her ministry and the ministry of agriculture and food security which is always focused on changing the lives of the communities.
“We are soon revamping the national social protection working group which will facilitate the coordination of all activities of social protection in the country,” Aya stated.
