Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The government of Western Equatoria State together with Ethiopian battalion serving with United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in the State; have launched eleven-day general cleaning campaign with the aim to keep the market conducive.

The exercise brought together business community carrying out commercial activities at Yambio market, government officials and Ethiopian battalion that participated in the eleven –day campaign.

Western Equatoria State Acting Governor, Dr Kennedy Gaaniko Baime said the clean-up exercise aimed at reducing risk of contracting diseases in the dirty environment from the market.

“The hygiene of the market is the responsibility of everyone who access the market to ensure the lives are protected.Keeping the hygiene of the market clean is our responsibility, but we should ensure that we begin this right from our homes. Always our surrounding should be kept clean,” Baime added.

However, Matrick Munkanga, the Deputy Mayor for Yambio Municipality underscored the importance of cleaning Yambio market as one way to create safe environment for the buyers and business community. Saying shops would remain close for one hour in the morning to allow the market’s clean up within the course of eleven days.

Mukanga appealed to members of the public in Yambio County to rally and participate in the clean-up exercise. “The cleaning will last for eleven days, and all shops will remain close for an hour, therefore reopen, juts to keep our main market clean,” Mukanga said. Early in February this year, similar exercise of town cleaning was initiated at Yambio Market for seven days.
