Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The National Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, Amref Health Africa, and World Vision, on Thursday commenced a five-day capacity-building training for health officials in Yambio, Western Equatoria State.

The program aims to strengthen disease surveillance, case management, and emergency preparedness at the state and county levels and empower frontline health workers to detect and respond swiftly to disease outbreaks, particularly in remote areas.

Speaking at the opening session on Thursday, David William, acting director of budget and health financing at the national health ministry, said the initiative is part of operationalizing national health strategies and improving health planning across the country.

“This training will enhance planning, accountability, and service delivery in the health sector, ensuring alignment between national priorities and local action,” he said.

Western Equatoria State Director-General of Health Rose Obede welcomed the exercise, noting it will boost coordinated planning from the state down to the facility level.

Meanwhile, State Health Minister James Abdallah Arona praised the effort, saying strengthening the capacity of health officials is key to delivering quality services and accurate health information to communities. He acknowledged challenges in counties including Ezo, Tambura, Nagero, and Mundri, especially in remote payams like Kediba, but noted that ongoing health transformation initiatives are improving service delivery.

The training, funded by WHO and led by the national health ministry, brings together county health directors, surveillance officers, and frontline health workers from across Western Equatoria.
