Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Vice President for Economic Cluster James Wani Igga is set to visit Western Equatoria State’s Tombura County after relative calm returned to the area. Western Equatoria State Deputy Governor, Dr Kennedy Gaaniko Baime, revealed this on Thursday.
He said Igga, who also serves as the Deputy Chairman of the SPLM, is set to visit Tombura County in the first week of March 2022 after making a promise in Juba.
The two discussed the political and security situation in the state. “It will send a good message that he stands with his people in this very critical time they are going through,” Gaaniko said.
“People in Ezo and Tombura need their leaders to go and encourage them because they have been through a lot and are now traumatised; they need moral and financial support, “the WES Deputy Governor added.
Dr Gaaniko said he is in Juba to discuss numerous issues, ranging from political issues to security, among others that he did not mention. He described their meeting with the vice president as vital towards supporting the people of WES, adding that it is great for the SPLM deputy chairman to visit the state.
“I want to thank the Vice President, Dr Igga because he accepted to visit Western Equatoria State again in the first week of the March next month,” he revealed.
According to Dr Gaaniko, who is the interim SPLM chairman in the state, the people of Western Equatoria State were very happy about Igga’s recent visit to the state following the coronation of the Azande King.
“We also discussed how the national government can support the people of WES, and indeed, the vice president sounded positive, and I hope, as a man who loves his people; he is going to respond positively,” Gaaniko added.
During his meeting with the vice president for the economic cluster, he called on the national government to support the people of Western Equatoria State (WES).
Fight erupts
In June last year, fighting erupted in Tombura County between area youth loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition and Gen. James Nando’s South Sudan People’s Defence Forces, forcing more than 100,000 people to flee their homes.
Since then, none of the country’s senior officials has visited the county, despite President Kiir forming a series of committees to address the core causes of the violence, which eventually led to the restoration of stability in the troubled area.
