Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Civil servants in Jonglei State will receive their January pay which is five months due.
The State’s Ministry for Information, Communication Technology, and Postal Services early this week notified workers that they will finally receive their long-overdue wages.
Chuol Peter Muhammad, the Director-General in the State Ministry, however, did not reveal the exact date that the notice will be effected.
“This piece of information serves to inform the entire workforce of the Ministry of Information and Communication in Jonglei state that, as the ministry is fully preparing for the amalgamation process of the previous four defunct states and transitioning to one unified Jonglei State, we’re looking forward to making sure that all the workforces are present during the upcoming January payment,” Chuol said in a statement.
Each employee is required to go with a valid national identity card, and no one is expected to be represented by another person.
“With exception of the deceased, every staff is asked to physically be present to receive his/her salaries in person with a valid identification card,” he continued.
“Failure to present in person, to the ministry, as stated above, will lead to the withholding of your salary.”
Battle for cash
Early this year, Jonglei State had been shaken by massive demonstrations over delayed pay, and withholding of allowances, not to mention the accusations that the national ministry of finance had been releasing salaries but failing to reach the recipients.
In February, the civil servants vowed that they would sue the state’s accounting officer for delaying selective pay to employees of some ministries.
“We are going to ask the accounting officer about the other institutions,” said Samuel Majier Loch, the Secretary-General of Jonglei State Workers’ Trade Union (JSWTU), adding that his response would determine their next step.
“If there is money, then maybe the other institutions will be paid on Monday. But if there is no money, we cannot go to the street this time; we are going to sue the accounting officer.”
A week before this, Jonglei State Governor, Denay Jock Chagor, suspended the state minister for finance.
Wiyual Gatkuoth Changath was indefinitely suspended on February 14, 2022, but the reason for his suspension was not cited.
