Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Jonglei State Governor Riek Gai Kok has announced an ambitious road rehabilitation plan aimed at improving access to essential services and stimulating economic activity across the state.
The initiative, endorsed by the national government and supported by the World Food Programme (WFP), is expected to restore key transport corridors that have long been rendered impassable, especially during the rainy season.
Speaking from his office in Bor on Thursday, Governor Riek said the plan marks a major step forward in connecting isolated communities to healthcare, education, and markets.
The project falls under WFP’s 2026 expansion strategy and targets several routes in critical need of rehabilitation. These include roads linking Ayod, Pathai, Mwotot, Waat, Walgak, Kalkuny, Akobo, Motot, Lankien, Pading, Karam, Poktap, Payuel, Pajut, Fatuei, Yuai, and Pieri.
Once rehabilitated, these routes are expected to remain accessible throughout the year, enabling the delivery of humanitarian aid, improving trade routes, and easing the movement of people and goods.
The governor emphasized that improved roads will play a vital role in strengthening community resilience and promoting recovery efforts in areas affected by years of conflict and seasonal flooding.
Riek credited the Ministry of Roads and Bridges and WFP for their support in designing and backing the initiative.
He described the government’s endorsement of the plan as a significant turning point for Jonglei, where poor infrastructure has contributed to ongoing humanitarian and development challenges.
The road upgrade plan has been welcomed by local residents. Jacob Akuot, a businessman based in Bor who regularly delivers goods to Yuai Payam, said the condition of roads in the area has been a major obstacle for traders and families alike.
“For years, we have struggled to take our goods to market and transport our sick to hospitals because the roads become impassable during the rainy season,” Akuot said. “If these roads are repaired, it will not only boost business but also save lives. This is the kind of development we’ve long waited for.”
As Jonglei continues to rebuild amid recurring displacement and infrastructure setbacks, the road rehabilitation project is seen as a practical and timely investment in the state’s future.
