Jonglei speaker reinstates suspended MP after apology

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The suspended lawmakers, Anter Bayak and Gabriel Gatluak, were appointed under the position allotted to the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSAO).

A member of the Jonglei State Legislative Assembly representing Duk County has been reinstated after being suspended for one month.

Jonglei State governor Denay Chagor suspended two lawmakers from Jonglei State Assembly without explanation in a gubernatorial order in August 2022.

The suspended lawmakers, Anter Bayak and Gabriel Gatluak, were appointed under the position allotted to the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSAO).

However, Gabriel Gatluak resumed his duties in the assembly last month leaving Anter Bayak Kuol in the cold.

In an order issued on October 6, the speaker of the assembly lifted Bayak’s suspension arguing that he had apologised for his actions.

“In the exercise of powers conferred upon me by the conduct of the business of Jonglei

State Transitional Legislative Assembly regulations and after the written apology

letter by Hon. Anter Bayak Kuol on his suspension order No: 08/2022,’’ the statement read.

“I Hon. Amer Ateny Alier do here by lifting your suspension and resuming your

Constitutional duties as usual, with effect from the date 6 October 2022.”

Bayak welcomed the move and promised to deliver the services to his constituents.

“It had affected the people I am representing in the legislative assembly because there was a vacuum in the parliament…there was no other person in the House to raise concerns for people I represent,’’ he said.

He added that he had to apologise after the speaker directed him to do so although he had no idea what his offence was to warrant the suspension.

“I was not convinced to write the apology letter but we have talked for two days and the speaker said I should write an apology.’’

Bayak lamented that South Sudan politics is not guided by the laws or the constitution of South Sudan and it is about time the leaders follow the law.

“There is no law that gives the speaker the right to suspend me for one month,’’ he protested.

“It is written in the conduct of the business that the person will be suspended for one week and if he withdraws whatever he/ she said to somebody, if there is evidence, he will be brought back to the assembly. What happened to me is just the use of power against me with the guided by the law.’’
