Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Jonglei State government has promised accountability in the armed “criminals” behind the attack on a humanitarian convoy escorted by UNMISS peacekeepers in Bor South County on February 9, 2024.
Governor Denay Jock Chagor made the remarks in a statement published by his press secretary on Sunday.
Unidentified gunmen materialized from bushes and shot at World Food Program vehicles enroute to Pibor Administrative Area at the location of Anyidi Payam of Bor South County, UNMISS and local authorities said.
The peacekeeping mission said the assailants damaged one of its vehicles, but there were no casualties. It added that UNMISS peacekeepers returned fire and repelled the attackers.
The Office of Governor Denay Chagor condemned the violence, adding the state government will not tolerate any form of hostility against humanitarian workers.
Chagor said through his spokesman, Ruach Wanlow Kong, that security forces are investigating the incident and will apprehend the culprits.
“Jonglei State government is still investigating the matter and will never tolerate any kind of attack on humanitarian vehicles or commercial convoys. The criminals who instigated the attack will be held accountable,” he said in the statement.
Wanlow commends UNMISS peacekeepers for foiling the attack. He appeals to aid organizations to continue providing life-saving assistance to vulnerable communities.
