Africa-Press – South-Sudan. JUBA, South Sudan (Eye Radio) — The South Sudan Bar Association leadership marked a milestone on Friday evening, convening members of the legal community for an anniversary dinner to recognize its first year of service since the 2024 leadership transition.
The event, held in Juba, Friday, December 19, served as a formal gathering to review the association’s progress and to recognize various contributors to the justice sector in South Sudan.
Advocate Arop Malueth Manon, President of the Bar Association, presided over the ceremony and presented the “Justice Awards.” These honors were established to recognize individuals, institutions, and media houses for their roles in supporting the justice system and promoting the rule of law over the past year.
The event was attended by senior representatives from the country’s legal and political sectors. Representing the Chief Justice of the Judiciary, Justice Bol Lul Wang of the Supreme Court served as the Guest of Honor.
Other notable attendees included former Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Ruben Madol Arol, former Chief Justice Chan Reec Madut, and former Deputy Chief Justice John Gatwech Lul.
The dinner was also attended by the CES Minister of Housing, Land and Public Utilities, David Morbe, and Juba County Commissioner Emmanuel Tete Ezbon.
The anniversary also highlighted regional legal cooperation, with the attendance of Isaac Ssemakadde, President of the Uganda Law Society, and David Sigano, CEO of the East African Law Society.
A key highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of a Lifetime Service Award to George Wilson, who was recognized for over fifteen years of service to the Bar Association. The association also officially honored Justice John Gatwech Lul for his service within the Judiciary as former Deputy Chief Justice.
In the categories of media and education, the Vision Center for Legal Studies was recognized for its partnership in legal training. Several media organizations were also honored for their coverage of judicial affairs, including Eye Radio, the Arabic daily Almougif Newspaper, the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC), and Nyakam News.
For Eye Radio, this recognition follows two other honors earlier in 2025. CEO Stephen Omiri stated that the award reflects the station’s commitment to independent journalism and its efforts to provide a platform for marginalized voices.
Station Manager Koang Pal Chang added that the recognition underscores the station’s role in promoting freedom of speech and fostering accountability within the current political landscape.
